Inverted images

2018 – 2019

I have always liked Caravaggio as a painter.

When I saw his painting Narcissus, I said to myself I would like to do my own paintings on the same theme.

I asked my friend, the photographer jean de Calan, how to create images of reflexions in his studio.

By aligning mirrors on the floor and with a judicious orientation of the spot lights, he was able to obtain in a
single shot the image of the model and his reflection. Given the small size of his studio, we were not able to
recreate the chiaroscuro atmosphere in Caravaggio’s Narcissus.

Then I reflected on how to obtain inverted images with mirrors placed vertically. I improvised. I experimented.

If I chose Narcissus as a subject, it’s because it comes from Greek mythology, which is one way, among
others, of explaining the place of man in this world.. That is what metaphysics is all about. I’ve been
interested in it since I was a child.
